Water attracts pests into your home. Some pests are more dependent on water than others, and their need for water varies throughout their life cycles.
Mosquitoes: They lay eggs in standing water, which can include still water outside (buckets, pots) or undisturbed water inside your home. One mosquito can lead to an infestation.
Termites: These destructive pests build colonies in homes. They use “exploratory” tunnels to find sources of food (wood) and moisture. Termites can be found in walls, basements, and crawlspaces.
Ants: They are attracted to sources of food and moisture. Ants frequently infest kitchens, where they find crumbs, grease, and water sources. Odorous house ants, common in American homes, are especially drawn to sugar and sweets.
Cockroaches: Nocturnal scavengers that hide in dark spaces during the day. They are attracted to food, moisture, and warmth. Cockroaches are often found in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Silverfish: These insects thrive in dark, moist environments and can be found in bathrooms and basements. They prefer starchy foods and are known to hide in drains and laundry rooms.
Drain flies: Found in kitchens and bathrooms, they lay eggs on wet surfaces near water sources. The larvae feed on organic matter within drains. While not harmful, their presence can indicate sanitation or drainage issues.
